Forest School – coming soon!
We’re excited to introduce a full Forest School programme soon. Until then, we offer outdoor exploration sessions in our natural play areas, but this is not yet a formal Forest School provision.Connecting children with nature, confidence, and creativity.
At Little Woodlands Day Nursery, we believe that learning outdoors is a vital part of early childhood development. While our full Forest School programme is coming soon, children already enjoy regular time exploring our woodland and nature areas. These early outdoor experiences help build curiosity, independence, and resilience as we prepare to launch the complete Forest School offering.
What is Forest School?
Forest School is a unique approach to outdoor education, where children spend regular, hands‑on sessions in a natural environment. Activities are child‑led and play‑based, encouraging confidence, teamwork, problem‑solving, and a love of learning through nature.
Our dedicated Forest School lead will be joining the team soon, and once in place, we’ll be offering a full programme of structured Forest School sessions.
In the meantime, our outdoor learning experiences are:
- Safe and guided by experienced practitioners
- Age‑appropriate for toddlers and preschoolers
- Inspired by Forest School principles
- Focused on holistic development: physical, social, emotional, and cognitive skills
Benefits of Forest School for young children
As we prepare to launch our full Forest School programme, children are already enjoying outdoor learning inspired by Forest School principles. These experiences help them develop:
-
Confidence and self-esteem by trying new activities and solving challenges
-
Physical skills through climbing, balancing, and outdoor play
-
Social and communication skills through group activities and teamwork
-
Creativity and problem-solving by engaging with natural materials and the environment
What do children do at Forest School?
While our full Forest School provision is coming soon, children currently take part in nature‑based exploration sessions in our woodland and outdoor areas. These activities reflect the spirit of Forest School and include:
-
Nature walks and wildlife exploration 🌳
-
Den building and imaginative play 🛖
-
Bug hunting and plant identification 🐞
-
Seasonal craft activities using natural materials 🎨
-
Storytelling and sensory experiences 📖
These sessions are designed to spark curiosity and encourage children to take the lead in their learning, supported by our skilled team.
Forest School and our curriculum
Our upcoming Forest School programme will complement the EYFS curriculum, supporting children’s development across all areas. Until then, our outdoor learning sessions already help children build confidence, resilience, and practical life skills — all while having fun outdoors.
